Williams Takes Opener at Randy’s Raceway

Mark Williams won the NASCAR feature at Randy’s Raceway to Open the 19th consecutive season of racing at the Berks Speedway.  A field of 18 racers were on hand to kick off the season and little rust was shown.  Many cars were extremely fast on the smooth 8 lane track.  Williams won 5 segments on route to a one lap victory over last years Point Champ Randy Haydt.  Haydt won 4 segments in his Skoal machine.  Third spot went to a very consistent Jim LeVan in his familiar orange Cup car.  Fourth was Brian Sponagle who won three segments including a win on lane 1.  Rounding out the first five was Cory Reinhard who won his first three lanes right out of the gate.  Sixth through tenth was Laudan Seigfried (2), Tom Wenner, Toby Reinhard, Adam Zappacosta, Tony Zappacosta.

NASCAR Notes-  Both Larry Sanders and Billy Decker had mechanical problems and were forced to drop out of the event.  Both Chris Brubaker and Savvy Cunnius won segments and wound up just outside the top ten.  Tom Wenner made a start with his Cup car and although he has not practiced all summer he had some good runs to earn a smooth 7th on the evening.  Ed Kenderdine had a fast car and drew the lucky number 2.  He started to put some good runs together in the outer lanes.  The win moves Mark Williams 1 ahead of Randy Haydt all time in Cup. 31 to 30 in career feature wins, though still behind Kenny Gilmore with 49.
